The countdown is on, Thursday, August 11 officially marks the start of the NFL Preseason. Do you know what that means? It’s also the start of tailgating season as well!

Now I’m not talking about the act of driving too closely behind someone in an unsafe manner, that’s the wrong kind of tailgating. I’m talking about heading off to the game early and dropping the tailgate down with some good friends, cold drinks and some expert grilling! Now that’s getting ready for some football!

Tailgating has become such a popular pastime that there are numerous websites devoted to it. You name it, tailgating accessories, tailgating recipes, tailgate parties and much more. These guys take their tailgating seriously! Here is a list of must have items to make your tailgate party the best ever.

1. A truck with a tailgate of course. SUV’s will also work and there have been some reported cases of trunks being used. We recommend getting a truck or going with friends that have a truck.

2. Large cooler, ice and plenty of cold drinks early in the season. Later in the season this changes to Thermos’ for hot coffee and hot chocolate.

3. Propane grill – There are many to choose from for the professional tailgater. Some of these are quite impressive and more closely resemble portable kitchens! Don’t forget the propane tank. Choose the newer see through composite tanks rather than one the outdated steel dinosaurs. Composite propane tanks are lighter, safer and allow you to see the fuel level so you won’t run out of fuel unexpectedly.

4. Your meat of choice. There is no wrong answer and multiple choice is OK.  Burgers, hot dogs, steaks, chicken, ribs, pork are all great choices.

5. Disposable plates, forks, knives etc.

6. Hamburger and hot dog buns,  condiments and sauces.
